Ethical rules for interpreters

All Semantix interpreters follow what is termed accepted ethical practices for interpreters. To read more about what accepted ethical practices are, go to the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency's (Kammarkollegiet) website.

Accepted ethical practices

The introductory conversation with the interpreter shall always begin with a short presentation of the interpreter and of the four cornerstones of the interpreter's ethical platform:


  • The interpreter shall always interpret everything that is said, without additions or detractions.
  • The interpreter is neutral, that is impartial.
  • The interpreter has professional confidentiality.
  • The interpreter interprets in the "I" form.
Other points also covered by accepted interpreter ethics include:


  • It is not permitted to interpret under legal challenge.
  • The interpreter, project administrator, and client should form a so called spatial triangle.
  • Cellular phones should be turned off during interpretation.
  • The interpreter must stay for the entire time booked if the client so desires.
  • Telephone interpretation must be done from a land line and in a separate, closed room.
  • The interpreter shall be on time for the session. If the interpreter realizes that they are going to be late, then they are to contact Semantix immediately.
