Chinese

The languages collectively called "Chinese" are actually a number of languages with a common/similar written language, but which are often mutually unintelligible in their spoken form. The two writing systems are: a "simplified" writing system (modern) used in China and Singapore and a "complete" writing system (Traditional), used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Malaysia.

Mandarin and Cantonese are spoken variants of Chinese. Different spoken Chinese languages may have the system of writing, even if they are mutually unintelligible in spoken form.

Prior to translation and interpretation

Before ordering a translation or interpreter, it is a good idea to know which country the translated material will be used in and which country the person to be interpreted comes from. This is particularly important for translations into languages which are spoken in many different countries, since the same language may be written differently and in some cases with different alphabets.
