African languages

"African Languages" are not a language group as such, but this term is used to group the languages spoken in the geographic region of Africa.

A range of different languages, from various language families and groups, are spoken in Africa. The language families represented are Afro-Asiatic languages (such as Arabic), Nilo-Saharan languages (spoken mainly along the Nile and in parts of the Sahara), Niger-Congo languages (such as Swahili), Khoisan languages (spoken mainly in Angola, Botswana and Namibia), and Austronesian languages (spoken in Madagascar and in parts of South East Asia). In addition, several European languages are spoken – mainly as a second language – such as English, French, and Portuguese (in former colonies).
