Afro-Asiatic languages

The Afro-Asiatic language family has its roots in northern Africa and the Middle East.

This language family includes the Semitic languages (including Arabic, Hebrew and Maltese), the Berber languages (spoken mainly in Morocco and Algeria) and Cushitic languages (such as Somali). The approximately 375 languages in these groups are spoken by over 300 million people. Some of the world's oldest existing languages are found within the Afro-Asiatic language family, and it was here that the first recognized alphabets were developed, by the Egyptians and the Phoenicians.
