Asian languages

"Asian Languages" are not a language group as such, but this term is used to group the languages spoken in the geographic area of Asia. Often refers primarily to the languages spoken in eastern Asia (Japan, China, North and South Korea), South Asia (including India and Pakistan) and Southeast Asia (including Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore).

Within this large geographic area there are a number of completely different language families and groups:

  • In East Asia one finds languages including Chinese (where Mandarin and Cantonese are two examples of variants spoken), Korean, and Japanese, which are all members of completely distinct language families.
  • In South Asia one finds such languages as Hindi and Urdu.
  • And in Southeast Asia, languages like Thai, Malay, Indonesian and Filipino are spoken.
