European languages

The term "European languages" can mean different things depending on the context.

Generally speaking, the term is used for the languages spoken in European countries (not just the official EU languages). This includes languages such as Maltese, which are of Semitic origin.

In the philological context however, the term means languages which have their origins in Europe, that is, the European part of the Indo-European language groups. This, then, also includes languages with European origins but which are not spoken in Europe, such as Afrikaans, which is spoken in South Africa.
