Language group

Language families comprise large groups of related languages. They are in turn divided into language groups.

For example, the Indo-European language family has many language groups including the Germanic, Romance, Slavic groups, which in turn are divided into subgroups.

The Germanic languages, for example, are divided into three subgroups: East Germanic, North Germanic (Old Norse) and West Germanic. Swedish, and the other Scandinavian languages, belongs to the North Germanic language group.
