Segment

A segment is the segment of the text (generally a sentence) that the CAT tool picks out from the file to be translated.

You can set the criteria for determining what a segment is in the CAT tool. Generally, segmentation is determined by delimiters that indicate the end of a sentence such as full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, but may also include line breaks, tabs and colons.

The translator may sometimes need to set aside the set criteria so that a segment may consist of several sentences. This is because, in some cases, the translation will be easier to read if one sentence in the source text is translated as two sentences in the target text (or vice-versa).
