(Eng. tags)

Tags are used in markup languages (such as HTML and XML) to structure the text information.

Tags identify elements in the markup language and also indicate where they begin and end. Tags start and end according to the rules of the markup language. In XML for example, tags must be enclosed in angle brackets: .

In XML there are single and paired tags. Single tags start and end at once: . The concluding solidus or forward slash "/" indicates that a single tag (and therefore the element) is ended. Paired tags start at the first tag: . The element continues until the same tag is repeated but with a solidus/forward slash directly after the first (left hand) angle bracket: . The actual content of the element is enclosed between the beginning and ending tags.
